Progress in Pilates differs from the fitness industry.....
In Pilates, we don’t push muscles to failure. This doesn’t mean Pilates lacks intensity or isn’t exercise; it is! Your Pilates session should challenge the body and mind without causing it distress.
When questioning the distinctions between the different levels it is important to know that unlike in traditional fitness where progress is often measured by increasing weight or repetitions, Pilates diverges. In Pilates, we prioritise the intricacies and depth of the movement.
Initially, there were no defined levels - teachers just taught the body in front of them!
Instructors tailored sessions to each individual. Over time, however, Pilates has been structured into levels, which has somewhat diluted its original approach. Yet, modularising through levels proves useful, defining our goals as we progress.
Your level in Pilates is defined by how you perform each exercise, not solely by the exercise itself. What truly matters is the knowledge, depth and intricacy that you bring to every exercise.
Therefore, it's entirely feasible to focus exclusively on beginner or Intermediate exercises and still achieve an 'advanced' level in Pilates.
“A person can be new to Pilates and execute advanced exercises. It is the HOW and DEPTH of the work which dictates the student’s level – not the exercise.”
- Kathy Ross Nash “The Red Thread of Pilates”
“Principal” or “Foundational” are much better words to use than “Beginner” as the primary objective is to learn the principles of Pilates and lay the foundations for future progress.
“Intermediate” is where you learn the core/majority of the work and from where all the “Advanced” and “Super Advanced” work comes from.
“Advanced” You don’t perfect the Advanced and Super Advanced repertoire by constantly practising Advanced exercises, but by digging deeper and deeper into the Principal/Foundational and Intermediate work.
Private sessions are tailored to the individual's needs and goals. Clients can expect to use the Reformer, Cadillac, Chair, High Barrel, Spine Corrector an various other apparatus during a session. These sessions are designed for students who require individual attention. This can be due to recovery from injury, illness, muscle imbalances or even a desire to take your Pilates practice further. These sessions can help you regain peak mobility and stability.
Duet classes are sessions with two students only. Duets are tailored to the individual needs of each client, using a variety of equipment. Come along with a partner, friend, or family member. Depending on the level, classes will vary. For a beginner's duet, the focus will be on fundamentals and technique. For the more experienced duets, the class will be more conditioning, strength training and cardiovascular.
Pilates Mat work originated before the creation of any Pilates apparatus used in the practice today and includes over 500 exercises.
Mat work is a great choice for all levels of Pilates practitioners as these movements not only build in levels of difficulty, but the exercises can be modified to decrease or increase the level of challenge. Practicing Mat Pilates helps build a strong, balanced body and increases flexibility. As you progress in your practice, you will notice improvements in breathing, focus, and body awareness.
Some Pilates Mat classes may include small apparatus, such as the magic circle, or hand weights. Small apparatus can be used to increase the challenge and/or to help you find the right muscle groups to target for each exercise. It is important that you understand how to use these props correctly to get the most out of your practice.
Mat Pilates can be modified for any age, body or fitness level.
Try not to get frustrated if you can’t do every exercise. Pilates is called a practice for a reason it requires focus and dedication.
A final word from Joseph Pilates himself:-
“Pilates is for doers and thinkers…”
Looking at how the different levels are described; this phrase seems perfect. If you’re not thinking as you do, you never gain the insights you need to progress.
